There is never that brown, sticky gooey buildup that need to be cleaned with a toothbrush. This is a great can-opener- it is very solid (unlike a lot of the new flimsy ones), easy to use, but MOST OF ALL. You pop off the whole top part with the blade and toss it in the dishwasher. Very sanitary. Why would you pay good money for an electric can-opener that you had to spend time scrubbing- there's too many other things to do with your time.
Got this can opener about six years ago and ran like a champ until about a couple of months ago; its motor is starting to get weak (Electric motors will do that after a while), and won't open cans of a thicker gauge metal. It drives me nuts when a company does this; use cheaper inferior parts to increase profit. on the back, and you do need to use care not to drop or hit the back of it, lest one of the latches break off - if it does get broken, you will not be able to get a replacement head, which is not a surprise to me as most can openers in this price catagory rarely have parts available (Not cost effective to repair).
I can give this thing a break though, it has gotten quite a workout in its lifetime; definately got my money out of it. The cutting head is easy to remove and replace, just be sure that it is firmly attached before use. I tried sharpening the cutter, but no help.
So, I am hanging onto the old cutting unit just in case. I have not found a better can opener, so I purchased the same model to replace it.I like the fact that most of the critical parts are metal, and that the head can be detached and cleaned. Used properly, it hangs onto the can and lid just fine in most cases. The detachable cutting unit does have three Relatively sturdy plastic latch fingers (Cams).
REVISED: After further analysis, most of the parts on the cutting unit that used to be metal are now chrome plated plastic (Body, lever, drive cog). Don't know how long this will hold up, but if the cutting unit does break, I can get it to use the old metal one, thankfully.
I recieved this as a gift last Christmas to replace a very old electric can opener that still worked. This can opener did not even last 1 year, and I am not hard on my stuff. The gears are plastic and failed and no replacement parts to fix. Unfortunately that one went to good will and now I am stuck having to go buy another. Definitely do not buy this - what a waste.
It's quiet, quick and smooth. Has all the feaatures you want and need in a can opener at the right price.
The "classic chrome" is really plastic painted silver and cannot stand the stress of normal use. Don't by this cheap product,
